Most commonly detected drugs

What are the most common drugs detected on a drug test?

At first glance, drug testing might seem like a straightforward process, but when you delve deeper into the data, you'll uncover a treasure trove of insights. Today, we're breaking down the relative percentages of drugs detected during drug tests, shedding light on trends, patterns, and surprises lurking beneath the surface.

Before we delve into the statistics, let's set the stage. Drug testing is a crucial tool used by employers, police, prisons, schools, rehab and healthcare to ensure safety, compliance, and accountability. From urine drug tests to hair follicle analysis, various methods of drug testing are employed to detect a wide range of substances.

Now, let's crunch some numbers! According to recent studies and industry reports, the relative percentages of drugs detected in drug tests can vary significantly based on several factors, including geographical location, demographics, and drug testing methodologies.

However, we can identify some overarching drug test trends:

Cannabis (THC)

Approximately 40-50% of positive drug tests are attributed to THC, reflecting the widespread use of marijuana and its metabolites. Most common drug tests in use will contain a screen for THC.

Opioids

Opioids contribute to around 20-30% of positive drug tests, encompassing both prescription opioids and illicit substances like heroin. Most multi drug test kits contain a screen for opiates.

Stimulants

Stimulant use accounts for roughly 10-20% of positive drug tests, including substances like cocaine, amphetamines, and methamphetamine. Most multi drug test kits contain a screen for cocaine and many now also contain a screen for amphetamine and methamphetamine.

Benzodiazepines

Benzodiazepines are detected in approximately 5-10% of drug tests, indicating their prevalence in both medical and non-medical contexts.

Synthetic drugs

Synthetic cannabinoids such as K2 - K3 and and synthetic opioids such as Tramadol make up a smaller but significant portion of positive drug tests, accounting for about 5-10% collectively. Synthetic drugs are now being tested for on the newer drug test kits.

Most of our urine and saliva drug test kits cover these common drugs of abuse.
