Digital Breathalyzer UK-what should you expect to pay?

Digital Breathalyzers are available for personal and business (also healthcare) users from a variety of professional suppliers.

As the breathalyzers require specialist servicing and technical support, they have not been sold via major electrical retailers, so most suppliers are internet specialist companies such as

Digital Alcohol Breathalyzers use digital semi-conductor and fuel cell technologies to selectively detect alcohol being excreated via the lungs to determine actual blood alcohol levels at the time of testing.

Samples are taken over 5 seconds and unit levels are displayed after conversion to usually either %BAC or mg/100ml BAC. Some models are available which directly display the breath alcohol concentration BrAC, but these are rare.

Cheaper digital breathalyzer units should be avoided because they are inaccurate and un-reliable. Entry level guidance is £40, expect to pay £80-100 for a high end alcohol breathalyzer unit with inbuilt electronic safety checking technologies (these ensure the unit tells you if it needs servicing)

Breath Test Alcohol-breathalyzer test kits UK

Breath tests for alcohol are widely available and work to set cut off levels, These are 0.02%BAC,(HSE occupational cut off) 0.05%BAC(European driving level) and 0.08%BAC (UK drive prosecution level)

The breathalyzer test kits are used once and then disposed into normal waste services.

Breath alcohol tests are available in packs of 3 and 6 and 20 tests. no specialist training is required to use the tests as a simple colour change confirms if the alcohol level is below the cutt off level or above it, making result interpretation simple.

The accuracy of breath alcohol test disposable breathalysers is very high at over 99% they are also stable and come with long expiry dates, making them ideal for users who may only need to test a few times a year or for a single event.

They are also the first choice for parents, wishing to police underage alcohol use.

Drug Test FAQ

Q) Is testing for drugs difficult and does it work ?

A) Drug testing is an easy and accurate method of detecting drug misuse.

Q) How can I screen for drugs of abuse & what do I do with the results ?

A) Most drugs can be screened for using either saliva or urine. These tests are immediate with results in under 10 minutes on-site. Confirmation samples can then be sent for laboratory analysis on positive samples. Negative samples are not usually followed as the accuracy of this biotech is very good.

Q) How effective are skin wipes for testing for drugs ?

A) Skin wipes are less available and have only been marketed recently, so their effectiveness and selectivity remains to be proven clinically.

Q) Can blood be tested for drugs ?

A) Blood testing is only used for a limited range of drugs and is not available for business or private use.

Q) Is hair testing for drugs available ?

A) Hair testing looks back up to 3 months but is lab based and expensive per screen. Mostly this makes urine and saliva the first choice screening method.

Q) How long do drug tests detect drugs for ?

 A) Urine Drug Detection Times & Cut Offs
Abbreviated name on drug test, proper name, other names approximate detectable time it remains in the URINE after use.

DIY Digital Breathalysers-which are the best ?

The choice is large and often confusing, so we thought we would try to guide potential buyers with the key features to look for in a personal digital breathalyser.

Higher price does not always mean higher accuracy, as the expensive breathalyser models are designed to be serviced regularly to maintain their accuracy and don’t have on board self diagnostics.

Here are some key points to consider when buying a DIY digital breathalyser:

1) Insist on interchangeable sensors – without this you are tied to sending the breathalyser regularly to a service centre for calibration services.

2) The breathalyser must have selectivity of no less than +/-0.01% BAC which is the same as +/- 10mg/100ml BAC. (avoid units with +/-0.02% and over)

3) Choose your display scale and stick to it, most digital breathalysers either display as %BAC or mg/100ml BAC  (BAC=Blood Alcohol Concentration) don’t confuse this with BrAC .(Breath Alcohol Concentration) which is available but rarer.

4) Be realistic, under £25 and you are getting a novelty device which you should not rely upon. Expect to pay £35-£70 for a digital breathalyser which will work well, give reliable readings, cost £15-20 to replace the sensor (every 300 tests or 6 monthly)

Our recommendation remains the DA5000 for all round value for money and accuracy £39.99 with free UK delivery, low cost sensors and mouth pieces (for personal use you don’t need to buy extras, they are washable and re-usable) In our opinion this is currently the best value breathalyzer on the market for personal use.

Cocaine rates of use in 16-24yr old up

New Home Office figures show the rates of cocaine exposure amongst 16-24 year old in England and Wales are up.

6.6% reported cocaine use in the previous 12 months compared to 5.1% a year earlier

The rise mirrors the adult trend, with cocaine use up to 3% for the year and 10% for all drug groups.

Lower prices and no decrease in supply or availability contributed. Polydrug use is also increasing.

Cocaine Vaccination works in 38% of subjects

Researchers at Bayer College of Medicine in Houston Texas have concluded the first part of Cocaine vaccination trials, and found the vaccine clinically effects 38% of subjects.

The vaccine uses the immune system to block the effects of cocaine and may be used in treating cocaine addiction – provided larger studies support the provisional idicators of effect and clinical safety.

It is not likely to be a treatment option for at least 3-5 years

Heroin users getting older

The number of new patients presenting with heroin and crack problems classed as “young Adults” has fallen by nearly 1/3 over the last 4 years. Over the same period there has been a 20% increase in adult presentations.

The fall mirrors the rise in cocaine use, demonstarting changing patterns of preferred drug abuse, but little overall change in drug usage rates overall.
