Just read an interesting article in the news in brief section of this months edition of Drink and Drugs News. (DDN)
Recent research from the Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF) indicated that nearly 80% of young people questioned can get hold of Cannabis in under 1 hour.
They found that most of the 11-19 year olds questioned buy Cannabis from friends with only 6% using what is traditionally regarded as a dealer.
The JRF found on questioning that most of the teenage friends questioned were sharing the cost of Cannabis rather than profiting from the onward distribution.
Conclusion, in the 11-19 age range at a local level cannabis supply is more social than commercial.

It was reported by the BBC yesterday that recent new research published in the December 2009 issue of British Journal of Psychiatry, shows that people who smoke the more potent form of Cannabis known as Skunk, are at a much higher risk of developing Psychotic illnesses such as Schizophrenia.
The frequency of useage and the length of time the drug had been used, also appeared to be a significant risk factor for the development of Psychosis as had previously been suspected

With drug use on the increase in under 16 year olds in the UK, worried parents are turning to home drug test kits to identify specific drug problems. Consumers are able to purchase a variety of testing kits which will identify if drug residues are still present in either saliva or a urine sample.
Saliva drug tests are prefered as they are easy to take without a doubt over the sample having come fresh from the donor. Urine drug tests will detect further back in time, but obtaining and handling a urine sample can be problematic for some parents.
The accuracy of both formats is very high at a quoted 98-99% compared to laboratory GC/MS tests methods (the gold standard in drug screening) Both saliva and urine drug tests give results within 5 minutes which is a great advantage.
Expect to pay between £3 to £10 for single or multipack urine drug tests and a little more for saliva drug tests.

Various varieties of Cannabis seeds and plants are sold and grown as Scunk or lambsbread/scunk F1 varietals.
All contain various concentrations of THC, so for cannabis drug testing purposes the same drug test will detect scunk, cannabis, hashish and any other subspecies indica or sativa derived products including all processed products including resins.
Any use can be detected using cannabis drug test kits

Police across the country are alerting british landlords to the fact that Cannabis is increasingly being grown in rented properties. Apparently Cannabis growers are taking advantage of the property slump and renting properties at the lower end of the market to set up Cannabis factories.
This is a growing problem in areas where rental properties are cheap.
Found these useful tips on how to spot a cannabis factory
The following tips may help people identify a cannabis factory:· The windows of the property are permanently covered from the inside
· Visits to the property occur at unusual times of the day or night
· People often do not live in the premises and only visit to maintain them
· There may be a vent protruding through the roof or a rear window
· There may be a pungent smell coming from the premises
· There may be noise coming from the equipment, such as cooling fans
· A large amount of pots and lights may be moved into the premises when the factory is set up
· In terraced houses, shared walls may appear wet to the touch
· Large amounts of soil and pots in back gardens

Just read this article online. It is by Tracy McVeigh and was published in the Observer Sunday March 15th 2009
It is a must read for all parents of teenagers . It is a long article but worth making the time to read. If you think this problem just affects other peoples teenagers then you really must read this
Here is an small extract from the article.
‘It is the end of a taboo: articulate, middle-class parents are speaking out about the nightmare of seeing their children spiral into drug abuse and, all too often, mental illness. Many blame themselves for staying silent, assuming that modern strains of cannabis were little different from the pot that baby boomers smoked at college. The reality is very different’

Just read this article about teenagers & skunk from March 16, 2009.
It is quite a long article so I have just given you a taster below. Well worth a read as contains lots of information about skunk as well as a ‘what would you do if your teenagers was smoking skunk’ question and answer session
Here is an extract from the article below:
Skunk: “Kids think the strong stuff is the best stuff”
There was a furore last week when the novelist Julie Myerson wrote about evicting her teenage son for his “skunk addiction”. She justified it by saying that Britain needed to wake up to the “emergency out there called skunk”.
Myerson’s outburst may have seemed slightly hysterical to anyone whose rite of passage included smoking a joint at some hazy point in the past, yet everything about skunk is more powerful than what came before. Its strength and its pervasiveness were cited by the Government as its reasons for raising cannabis back to a Class B drug in January.
Skunk has created a new domestic drugs industry, making millions for illegal farmers - mainly Vietnamese immigrants - on Britain’s industrial estates, and it has done so in an astonishingly short time. Police seizures show that it accounted for barely 10 per cent of the cannabis sold here in the late 1990s; last year it was 80 per cent.
What struck me, talking to teenagers in the course of writing this piece, was the sheer rapidity of this transformation. I’m in my thirties, yet what young people now regard as “normal” cannabis was unheard of in this country a decade ago. “Skunk is horribly strong - you can practically feel your brain cells knocking off,” says Ben, a 19-year-old student. “But it wasn’t that we asked for it. Growing up in rural Herefordshire, it was all we could get.”
