Drug and alcohol stories in the news recently

Two Deaths from Ecstasy November 2011 after clubbers had attended the same venue Alexandra Palace London

Last month 2 young men died aged 20 and 21 years of age died after being admitted to hospital after having taken suspected ‘rogue ecstasy’. A third man was also admitted.

All drivers in France may be  required to carry breathlyzer kits in their cars from Spring 20112

New planned legislation recently announced by the french president recently will require all drivers in France to keep breathalyzer kits in their cars to test themselves. The new planned requirement is a move by the french to cut the number of deaths on the french roads . Under the new plans anyone stopped and found not to have a breathalyzer kit in their car will be fined.

Scotland minimum alcohol prices BBC news 2/11/11

”The Scottish government has announced plans to make Scotland likely to become the first country in Europe to introduce a minimum price for alcohol.

The SNP government has said it is the best way to tackle the serious criminal, social and health problems associated with alcohol abuse.

The proposal will mean cheap, strong drink will become more expensive. ”

Abuse of painkillers reaches ‘epidemic’ levels in US BBC news 2/11/11

”Abuse of prescription painkiller have reached “epidemic” levels in the US, a government report says.

Overdoses of pain relievers cause more deaths than heroin and cocaine combined, the report has found.

It says sales and prescriptions of the drugs rose sharply in recent years and this was linked to the rise in overdoses.

Narcotic painkillers are prescribed to relieve chronic pain but the drugs can be “highly addictive”, the report says.

The report, published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), said fatalities caused by narcotic pain relievers have more than tripled in the last 10 years - equivalent to 40 deaths a day.”

Children claim alcohol intake of 28 units a week BBC news 30/10/11

”A small number of children as young as 12 claimed they drank the equivalent of 19 glasses of wine a week when questioned for a health survey.

Research by the independent Schools Health Education Unit suggested that 4% of those questioned aged 12 or 13 claimed they drank 28 units or more.

However, the overall trend in the survey of almost 84,000 youngsters was for fewer to be drinking and smoking.

The government says it is cracking down on those who sell alcohol to children.”

Police investigate Bracknell mephedrone dealers BBC News 23/9/11

”Police are to crack down on dealers of the illegal drug mephedrone after Berkshire counsellors reported a rise in the number of people seeking help over the drug.

Bracknell Forest Council says it has seen double the number of under 18s seeking help since April, compared with last year.

It issued a warning about an extra strong batch of the drug last month.

Counsellors are concerned as users can become mentally addicted to the drug”
