Random drug testing at work

Monday, July 21st, 2014

Random drug and alcohol testing at work keeps employees safe, reduces risks and insurance costs to business’s.

Workplace drug testing is standard practice in many industries operating in safety critical environments. Random drug testing is a key element of any workplace drug testing program and needs to be operated fairly and efficiently for both employees and the employer to gain the maximum benefit. explaining the benefits to employees is a key element of any drug and alcohol testing program. Employees need to be made aware of the benefits of a safe and drug free environment of work. Extending this to non safety critical employment roles may not be critical to the safe delivery of service, but can lead to improvements in both efficiency and moral, as employees perceive the policy as being more fair and even across the entire workforce.

Employers can simplify the introduction of drug and alcohol screening programs by introducing them into all recruitment events as part of routine health care screening. Where companies do not routinely undertake health screening, introducing drug and alcohol screening into new employment contracts enables the testing of staff in the future, even if this is not being considered immediately. Random testing policies should allow for testing to be undertaken even when no suspicion has been raised, but this needs to be administered in a fair manor, without discrimination. This would normally require the amendment of historic employment contracts held for employees performing identical or similar employment duties.

Random drug testing is normally best undertaken using a saliva drug screening test kit. This tests for 5 or 6 common drugs of abuse, can be taken directly from the employee with their consent and gives on-site screening results in under 5 minutes. saliva tests with up to 12 drug group results are available for employers requiring a more comprehensive screen, but with no HSE guidance on the expected test combination, 5 or 6 drug groups is all most employers will be expected to use. Cover the common drugs and any localised problem drugs (your local drug team can help you with this one) UKDrugTesting have staff who know what tests are best for your business and will help you choose the best value, in both cost, accuracy, and ease of use. (there is no point having a 99% laboratory test if it is so complicated to use, you waist half of them in procedural errors)

Random drug testing will reduce your absent from work rate, reduce the risk of workplace accidents, motivate you staff not to recreationally experiment with drug use. As an employer you will benefit from actively encouraging the health and well being of your workforce.

How to choose a Drug Testing Kit for Workplace Drug Testing

Monday, June 2nd, 2014

Workplace drug testing is widely established in many industries, but the choice of drug testing kits can be confusing and there is little authorative advice on which drug test kits are best for the job. Not all drug testing kits are suitable for use in the workplace, the quality and accuracy of cheaper, unbranded drug tests make them unsuitable. Reducing the costs can be an expensive mistake, leading to both false negative and false positive screening test results.

Here is some simple and clear advice for employers looking to source a suitable drug testing kit for onsite cost effective drug screening in the workplace.

1) What drugs do you need to test for ?

It seems a simple choice to pick a combination drug test kit, usually referred to as a multi-panel drug test with the right combination of drug tests grouped together for the job. In reality you are faced with a never ending array of drug test panel combinations, many including drug groups that you have never heard of. Do you need a 3 panel or a 12 panel ? What is expected as a base line test ? Is there an industry specific minimum expected ? UKDT can give you help and advice in the choice of a suitable drug test panel combination, avoiding you paying for or testing for irrelevant drug groups. In fact most workplace drug testing needs no more than 5 or 6 drug groups on the panel used. Others may only be relevant to a specific demographic or regional drug issue, but we can guide you on this before you buy.

2) How far back do you want to test ?

Not all drug testing kits are the same. Most screening tests use urine or saliva samples to detect drugs. Urine drug testing will almost always look back further in time compared to an equivalent saliva drug test. In the workplace  a urine test will detect more social and recreational drug use which will have to be confirmed and addressed. Saliva drug tests may be a better choice in only detecting employees with active drugs in their system while attending the workplace. In this regard , more and more employers are selecting saliva drug testing kits as their first choice. A full brand specific list of drug detection times is available on our web site UKDrugTesting.co.uk

3) Urine or saliva collection, what’s best for you ?

Saliva Drug Screening

Saliva Drug Testing Kit

A lot of employers don’t like the idea of handling urine samples for drug testing. The one major disadvantage is not being able to directly observe the sample collection, this reduces the confidence in what is termed chain of custody, put simply knowing that the sample you are testing has come from the person you are wanting to test. Saliva drug testing is the best choice for employment drug testing is almost every location where a full healthcare suite will not be available in which to perform the drug tests. Samples can be collected at the point of testing. Where urine testing is preferred then cup drug tests are a design option to be considered. These are collection cups with both temperature strips and in some cases adulteration test strips incorporated. The temperature test reduces the risk of dilution or sample substitution, as does a simple urine adulteration test strip. The whole cup is given to the testee to provide a urine sample and with split cup designs the original sample can be sealed for confirmation testing. See ukdrugtesting drug test kit cups.

4) Branded quality counts in employment tribunals.

Instalert brand drug testing kits

Not all drug tests are born equal. The quality of the biotechnology and component construction are all critical to producing a reliable drug testing kit. Cheap drug testing kits will give inaccurate results leading to both false negative, and more problematic false positive results. Reliability and accuracy are key. Our advice is always buy a branded professional drug testing product from an established specialist distributor with many years experience of the drug test products and the brand you are about to purchase. Don’t be afraid to ask simple questions about the brand and how long they have been selling it. Ask how it is imported and stored and if batch certification is available for the drug testing kits you would be buying. CE and FDA certification are base requirements, granted every 3 years,  and not a guarantee of batch quality.

5) UK based customer sales and post sales support including cross reactivity data will be important to you.

You will have to deal with positive results if you perform workplace employment drug testing. You are going to need further information and technical support from your drug test kit supplier. You will value having direct phone access to someone who can answer you query. UKDrugTesting have UK based, office hours technical and product support available to all customers using our drug testing kits.

Drug Testing In The Workplace In The UK

Thursday, July 11th, 2013

Drug testing in the workplace is now well established in most larger UK companies and has expanded rapidly in UK SME’s. Workplace drug testing benefits companies, reducing risk, and demonstrates an understanding of the health and employment risks of ignoring employees attending the workplace, under the influence of drugs and alcohol.

Many large companies understand the benefits of immediate on-site drug & alcohol screening, and undertake this in house with point of care onsite drug testing kits. this also offers enormous cost benefits with instant drug testing kits such as the FirstSign 6 drug saliva drug testing kit costing as little as £6 per test.

In house screening for drugs is simple to do, responsive and 100% adequate to exclude all negative test results. Companies considering workplace drug testing for the first time are sometimes anxious that an in-house solution will not be adequate legally and be messy and difficult to operate. Workplace drug testing kits have been designed to be easy to use and accurate. They are used internationally by some of the worlds largest companies as front line employee drug screening tests, excluding millions of negative screens from expensive and slow laboratory drug testing.

Pre-employment drug testing, random workplace drug testing, targeted on-suspicion workplace drug testing, and any other targeted role specific (high employment risk) employee drug screening, and post incident or accident workplace drug screening, are all suitable for on-site point of care workplace drug testing kits such as the FirstSign oral drug testing kit, the InstAlert DSD-765 oral saliva drug testing kit or UKDrugtesting’s DSW-765 drug testing kits for saliva.

The saliva drug testing kits above each offer a slightly different combination of 6 drug groups. There is no specified group or combination of drugs which has to be covered by UK law or HSE recommendation, It is left to the Employer to consider the local common risk hazards and the demographic of the workforce and pick a combination which covers these drugs. The six drug combinations all include the common recreational drugs, and are all suitable for employment workplace drug testing.

Oral Drug Testing Kits for Employers

Friday, June 28th, 2013

Oral drug testing is very attractive to employers, as it offers a quick easy and non invasive route for onsite drug screening of employees. Many employers are opting for oral or saliva drug screening in preference to urine drug screening, as oral drug screening can be just as cheap and reliable as the traditional urine drug tests, but avoids the issues of observed sample collection inherent in the urine drug testing method.

Oral drug testing kits suitable for employers can cost as little as £5 per test and give immediate provisional test results on site, with accuracy levels of between 97 – 99% compared to laboratory tests. This makes saliva oral drug screening a reliable and cost effective front line drug screening option, for even small and medium sized employers, as the oral drug test kits can be purchased in small numbers without restrictive or expensive contracts.

Oral drug testing kits are available with a range of drug detection tests built into the panel. Our recommended combination is the DSW-765 6 drug oral saliva drug screen as it covers the common drugs most employers are interested in screening out. The DSW-765 oral drug test kit is easy to use and gives clear, easy to read results in 5 minutes. Employers can use this as a first line drug screen to exclude all negative tests on employees, in an easy to complete and cost effective drug screening program. All provisional positive results from the drug screen should be confirmed using an accredited laboratory before disciplinary action is taken (as with all onsite drug tests)

The DSW-765 panel comes from one of the worlds leading manufacturers of saliva drug testing kits, and has full quality certification including CE, IVDD, TUV etc.

Packs contain 20 full saliva drug tests, each individually foil wrapped, 20 saliva collection swabs and 20 collection and transfer tubes, together with an easy to follow instruction and clinical data sheet. The 20 test pack retails for between £110 and £125 plus VAT, making it one of the most cost effective 6 drug saliva tests available currently in UK. However the performance is anything but cheap. The membranes give clear easy to read results, tests take a maximum of 10 minutes to complete, and individual results are given for each of the 6 drug groups included on the test.

But its the combination which makes it a first choice for workplace drug screening & testing:

Cannabis
Cocaine
Amphetamine
Methamphetamine
Bezodiazepine
Opiate

Covering a full range of common recreational drugs, (the Methamphetamine test will detect both crystal ice but also most MDMA Ecstacy tabs which will commonly contain MET and other Amphetamine esters) Benzodiazepines are a wide ranging group of prescription drugs including tranquilisers and sleeping pills (important to screen if employees are to undertake high HSE risk roles) and lastly Opiates which will cover for street heroin, but also prescription pain killers containing high dose codiene, which again can have a sedative effect. Workplace Drug Testing |Drug Testing Kits For Employers | Drug Testing FAQ’s

Friday, February 10th, 2012

Most employers would rather consider a saliva drug testing kit to the more traditional urine collection and drug testing procedures for workplace drug testing, and there is no reason why a saliva drug test should not be used for most employment drug testing.

Pre-employment drug screening is a little different. Employers are looking to screen for a longer period than is obtainable with instant near patient saliva drug tests. Urine drug screening will extend the detection period to 3 to 5 days for most drug groups. This will pick up more recreational drug use than saliva drug testing. If the drug screen has been notified, then the majority of potential employees will avoid recreational drug use in the week before the medical. To effectively screen for recreational drug use in this situation, the notification to attend for medical screening should be minimal. Otherwise you are only screening for hardened regular or dependent drug users, and the range of drug membranes included in the screen, should best reflect this.

We are commonly asked what to include in the employment drug screen, as there is no HSE list or specific guidance on what drugs should be included in the drug test, and what can be ignored. Our advice is to include the range of common recreational drugs which can affect performance, namely Cannabis, Cocaine, Amphetamines (and Methamphetamines) and opiates. We also recommend Benzodiazepines should be part of occupational drug screening, as most sedative tranquilisers affect performance, as can sedatives taken as sleeping pills. These should certainly be included in HSE high risk occupational drug screens examples being machine operatives, line side certification, PSV, HGV etc.

It may be worth contacting your local drugs team and finding out which drug groups are prevalent in your local area. We have noticed that Ketamine has started to become increasingly prevalent over the last 12 months and causes problems in an employment setting, as it highly sedative. Ketamine is in fact a veterinary tranquiliser, which gives you some idea how sedative it is.  An increasing number of drug screens now include Ketamine, and we are being asked for drug testing kits that incorporate Ketamine now on a daily basis, although currently this option is only available in our urine drug testing kits.

SAMHSA have recently moved further in favour of saliva drug screening to become the first line method for federal employee testing in the US. This should see further developments in saliva drug screening with new drug test membrane options for saliva testing becoming available and a standardisation of the saliva drug cut off levels to enable direct brand comparison and greater covergence in testing results and quality.

Business Drug Testing Kits-Advice for business drug screening in the workplace

Monday, July 4th, 2011

 workplace drug testing

Business drug and alcohol testing is growing, and now forms an important element of general health screening for job applicants, accross a wide spectrum of industry. The growth in drug use has seen more and more employers addressing the issues of drug misuse, dependency and social recreational use creeping into the workplace and employee productivity and safety. Pre-employment drug screening has seen the greatest growth in recent years, and now extends far beyond the safety critical employment roles.

Employers are perfectly at liberty to request applicants provide a drug screen sample as part of any job application. Prospective employees may decline. There is no current UK legislation preventing an employer from excluding a candidate on the basis that they have refused to provide a sample for drug screening as part of the companies routine pre-employment screening. As long as the drug screening is routine, this does not currently constitute discrimination of any kind. Indeed companies can argue that they hold a duty of care to ensure no employee undertakes duties while under the influence of drugs or alcohol which may make both them and their environment unsafe for themselves and fellow workers. The last argument is much stronger where the employment role includes safety critical duties.

Pre-employment drug testing is therefore one of the most easy and common programmes of drug screening to implement and operate. We are often asked by companies what is the most common package of drugs, or minimum range of drugs which is expected in a drug screening program. The answer is not always straight forward, as some consideration should be given to the target demographic and also local drug availability and usage patterns. As a base guide we would recommend a baseline of 5 or 6 drug groups, to which other local or industry specific additional can be made. FOR UK EMPLOYMENT DRUG TESTING we would recommend the screen cover  Cannabis, Cocaine, Opiates, Methamphetamine & Amphetamine +/- Benzodiazepines For most screening a 5 panel drug test kits is the best option for urine drug testing and if saliva drug testing is preferred then a 6 drug saliva testing kit for Cannabis, Cocaine, opiates, Amphetamine, Methamphetamine and PCP is a great option. A wide range of urine and saliva drug test kits are currently available.

Buyers should ensure that packs are from a reputable specialist supplier, offering full technical support and cross reference data for the kits. All drug screening kits should be properly branded CE marked professional packs with original data sheet and both CE mark, manufacturers data and EU representative details for the CE quality mark (CE mark alone is not good enough) the product you buy should be healthcare standard class1 biotech imported as an IVDD (In Vitro Diagnostic Device) and stored correctly by the distributor. Ensure the supplier has over 10 years experience of drug screening biotechnology and has medically trained staff with clinical experience of drug screening available to advise you as part of the service.

Drug testing in the workplace

Wednesday, October 20th, 2010

More and more companies in the UK are now routinely undertaking regular drug and alcohol testing programs. Leading the way are safety critical employers, where drug screening is an integral element of health and safety proceedure. UK Employment agencies are increasingly being requested to provide drug and alcohol tests as part of a routine pre-employment screen, and as an ongoing certification requirement for contract or agency staff, being deployed in safety critical employment environments.

Drug testing in the workplace need be no more taxing for employers than a routine urine dip health test for kidney disease or diabetes, and is available from under £4.00 per test.

Urine drug screening products offer the most cost effective and best route for effective detection of drug use in the preceeding 72hrs.

Many testing agencies would prefer to test using a saliva drug test kit, until they understand the much shorter period of detection achievable with instant on site saliva drug tests (12-24hrs in most drug group) Of course this can be an advantage where agencies are concerned only with detecting recent or active drugs, currently still in the employee and still likely to be psychoactive and affecting performance.

Urine drug tests will detect the use of drugs in the last 3 to 5 days, so they will detect recreational Cannabis, Ecstacy and Amphetamine use (club drugs) used on a Friday and Saturday, in employee drug tests on Monday or Tuesday.

A full list of product specific drug detection times is available from www.ukdrugtesting.co.uk drug detection times data here
